Asbestos Removal Process

Asbestos has long been known to be tied with mesothelioma, a rare but deadly cancer that spurs the development of tumors on linings surrounding vital organs. Asbestos, while not used in construction today, is still known to be contained within numerous old structures, among them schools and older factories. Although not dangerous in a non-agitated state, its still a bit worrisome knowing that many buildings still contain the dangerous material, whose fibers can be dispersed into the air during lackluster constructions projects or accidents (such as fires or earthquakes).

If you know your home or your business structure contains asbestos, it might be time to remove it. The asbestos removal process is quite lengthy and complicated. Special steps are taken to completely eliminate the possibility of asbestos fibers being release into the air. If such an event would occur, the asbestos fibers would put everyone in the immediate vicinity in danger of contracting mesothelioma. This fibers are difficult to detect as they are microscopic and aren’t accompanied by any particular taste or smell. The dangers that the removal process entails have recently been subject to controversy. Many are against removing asbestos from older buildings as a result of the problems which could ensue as a result of improper removal.

Many companies worldwide have already taken the initiative to remove asbestos from older buildings. Even the government has been involved in contracting with companies to remove asbestos. The controversy surrounding removal is not likely to subside anytime soon. However, people will soon need to begin understanding that the risks involved in removal may far outweigh those involved in keeping the asbestos as-is. In the end, it is the choice of a the specific owner of a structure whether he or she wishes to remove the asbestos that may be contained within the structure. While this decision is not always straight-forward, it is agreeably necessary.

Asbestos Ceiling Tiles – Potential Hazards And Precautions

Asbestos was widely used as a component of ‘popcorn’ ceiling in homes or in the form of asbestos ceiling tiles. It was also used as decorative sprays on the walls or for soundproofing purposes. However, off late there has been a lot of concern regarding the use of asbestos ceiling tiles because of harmful affects of asbestos particles on human health.

Hazards of Asbestos ceiling tiles

Asbestos contains deadly silicate fibers that can be airborne on applying physical force on asbestos ceiling tiles. The fibers when inhaled are retained by the lungs and cause potent lung disorders, such as mesothelioma or asbestosis. Even if ceilings are asbestos-free, certain insulation materials like Zonolite used in attic floors, can release toxic levels of asbestos while fixing a ceiling fan or a light. Asbestos ceiling tiles may contain formaldehyde and such volatile organic compounds as components. Asbestos found in ceiling tiles, if in good condition, causes no risk but loose, damp or crumbly asbestos is dangerous. Drilling and scraping of such material is a health hazard. In those cases, the building owners should remove the asbestos ceiling tiles or take necessary steps to prevent asbestos exposure due to asbestos contaminated ceiling tiles.

Safe Handling of Asbestos ceiling tiles

The best way is to avoid the use of asbestos ceiling tiles. However, if you are using asbestos ceiling tiles, you must take necessary precautions to avoid asbestos exposure. Some of the steps are:

Select low-emitting ceiling tiles certified by a reputed organization like Greenguard Environmental Institute.

Use porous ceiling tiles that trap odors and chemicals emitted from building activities.

Install ceiling tiles in a building only after painting, flooring or other such work is over. This prevents the ceiling tiles from absorbing and retaining the chemicals and organic solvents.

Recycle old ceiling tiles under new programs.

Hire professionals to reconstruct asbestos ceiling tiles as they adhere to safety norms and rules. Avoid sanding and dry-buffing asbestos floors.

Follow wet stripping or use low abrasion pads below 300 rpm to avoid exposure.

Report any broken ceiling tiles to Environmental Health & Safety Department.

File an Employee Exposure Report within 24 hours or as soon as possible with the Environmental Health & Safety Department in case of accidental exposure to asbestos.

Remember! A minor exposure to asbestos fibers can cause lung disorders, asbestosis or mesothelioma. Therefore, it is better to safe than sorry.

Artificial Flowers and Artificial Plants Have Their Advantages

While few things are as lovely and fragrant as real flowers and plants, artificial flowers and artificial plants do have their advantages in some situations. If you are planning an event, or need to send a remembrance, sometimes artificial flowers and artificial plants make the best sense.

When many people think about artificial flowers and artificial plants, they think of those awful plastic arrangements found gathering dust on discount department store shelves. But things are quite different today and realistic silk orchids or flowers have replaced the tacky plastic flowers and plants of the past.

Weddings

Artificial flowers and artificial plants can be great for extending a wedding budget. Silk flowers can be used in place of real flowers, and with a drop of scented oil applied in the very center, most people can’t tell the difference between the two.

Silk flower wedding arrangements are also perfect for high traffic areas where real flowers would take a bruising. Artificial flowers and artificial plants make perfect pew decorations. Guests may accidentally brush up against them as they are seated, but the petals will look as lovely as ever. You never need to worry about silk orchids or flowers wilting.

Scrapbooking, Crafting, and Cake Decorating

Artificial flowers and artificial plants are the perfect way to add floral accents to scrapbook pages and crafts. For example, a copy of the wedding invitation is usually saved by the bride for a keepsake. Silk flowers, whole or with petals and leaves separated for convenience, can be used to decorate the pages of a scrapbook or keepsake frame.

You can also decorate a cake with realistic silk flowers that are far more beautiful and dramatic than piped frosting creations, and you can save them afterward in a keepsake box.

Bereavements

Sending flowers in times of sorrow is a time honored tradition, and real flowers are both lovely and fragrant, but they fade away all too soon. Many families have a custom of offering bereavement floral arrangements to friends and family as a poignant remembrance of a loved one’s passing. Silk flower arrangements make a lasting gift that will bring back fond memories of absent friends and family for years to come.

Artificial flowers and artificial plants made today are just as beautiful and nearly identical to the real thing. If you want the beauty of flowers in your life, why not add some permanence with lovely silk flowers and plants.

Artificial Flowers: A Great Alternative

Because flowers are so beautiful, most people do not think about the fact that they are really expensive or that they last so temporarily when cut. The good news is that there is an incredible alternative to using so much money on something that will only last a few days: artificial flowers. There are so many uses of flowers that you might be surprised to find out how much all of your flowers are actually costing.

Flowers. You see them growing in gardens or adorning elegant tables as the centerpiece or the dresses of young girls at the prom. They are given as tokens of love and affection to celebrate birthdays, Valentine’s day, engagements, anniversaries, and other special days between lovers. They provide decoration at a variety of popular events like bridal showers, weddings, banquets and graduation ceremonies. For each of these important occasions, consider replacing real flowers with artificial flowers. You will not be sorry you did.

Artificial flowers are great. They look just like real flowers, so you will not have to worry about sacrificing one of the main reasons people love flowers: their beauty. Your friends and guests may not even know that you have used artificial flowers because their quality is constantly increasing. Whether you are planning a special party or looking for the perfect flowers to include in your bridal bouquet, you can be sure that the artificial flowers you choose will have all of the beauty you desire.

Often when planning for a large event, expense is something that must be taken into consideration. If you are looking for ways to save money, one of the first things to consider is the use of artificial flowers. The longer you have to look for the perfect flowers, the better deals you may be able to find. Artificial flowers can be found on sale at a variety of craft stores many times throughout the year. Almost any variety of flowers that you are looking to use are now made artifically, so don’t worry that you will have to settle for kinds of flowers that you do not really like.

Perhaps the best benefit of using artificial flowers rather than real flowers is their longevity. There is nothing worse than picking the perfect bouquet for your centerpiece only to have it be dried out and wilted by the next day. And who really likes to give a gift that will last only a few hours or at most a couple of days? (Or, better yet, who likes receiving this kind of temporary gift?) With artifical flowers you can give a give that almost everyone enjoys, or you can decorate for your event or holiday and be sure that your hard work will last long after your guests go home. After the party is done you can give away the bouquets of beautiful artificial flowers as favors or parting gifts for to your family and friends.

Everyone agrees that flowers are beautiful, and most everyone agrees that they make a great gift or a perfect decoration. Spread the word and soon everyone can also agree that artificial flowers are a perfect alternative no matter the occasion.

Are Your Home Theater Speakers in the Right Place?

Sound is one of the most important aspects of a great home theater experience. Quality sound really brings film to life and that fact spurs many home theater aficionados to select their speakers and sound equipment with great care.

Too often, though, the speakers that sounded great in the listening room don’t pack the same punch when installed at home. The issue is usually related to speaker positioning.

There are a few factors anyone should consider when installing home theater speakers. One should be aware of proper distancing, height and angling (also referred to as toe-in). Sometimes the perfect set-up is outlined in the owner’s manuals and documentation that come with the speakers. In other cases, it’s necessary to evaluate proper positioning with a “trial and error” technique.

If your speakers aren’t bringing the movies to life for your home theater system, don’t give up and go purchase a new sound system until you first double-check the positioning of your speakers. Even small adjustments can have a huge impact.

By finding the optimal positioning for your speakers, you can breathe new life in what you may have believed to be an inferior speaker. You can also begin to enjoy the movies the way you had hoped to when you first decided to invest in a home theater system.

Are You Thinking About Buying Ornate Tin Ceiling Tiles?

Use Aluminium Instead Of Tin

An aluminum alloy has now been created to especially suit these beautiful art metal ceilings. Aluminum is a corrosion resistant, durable product which doesn’t rust, unlike steel which is used by some manufactures of pressed tin. The panels are still widely known as pressed tin even though they are not made from tin.

Think About The Design In Your Ceiling Panels And whether They Will Suit The Measurements Of your Room

With a little forethought you can create a “tin” ceiling that exudes the “Wow Factor”. The “Wow Factor” is the reaction you will receive when your visitors look at your new ceiling for the first time. To get that factor you need to spend a little time thinking about how the ceiling panels will fit your particular room. If the repeat pattern you have chosen measures two feet by two feet, will you need to trim all the outside panels in order for them to fit the dimensions of your room? If this would be the case then you need to re-think your plans. You have two choices: choose a small all-over style which will look perfectly fine if trimmed to fit the room or you can use a border panel around the outside of your room and have the larger designs in the centre of the ceiling. Most of the larger designs require a border or filler strip around the edge, otherwise they don’t look so elegant when installed. Border or filler panels most usually have a small pattern on them which complements the larger main panels in the centre of the ceiling. If you require a border around your main panels then it will be worth consulting an expert to find out how wide the border should be. It is easy to upset the balance of your ceiling by having a border that is too wide or conversely too narrow. Ask your supplier for help on this topic.

Is Crown Cornice Needed?

There is now a delightful range of crown cornice moldings made from aluminum. These come in a variety of sizes to suit various ceiling heights. Crown cornices need to be mitred in the corners of the room and there are now various accessories to suit the individual cornices. These accessories are very handy as they hide the mitred cut edges which can sometimes be a little rough for those home handymen who have little experience in mitring. An alternative to metal crown cornices are timber moldings. Plaster cornices should not be used with metal ceilings.

Can You Install Your Tin Ceilings Yourself?

The easiest way to install pressed tin is to firstly fix building ply to the old ceiling or walls and then nail the tin to the ply. Timber battens can be used but building ply makes the job much easier. It is best to remove existing cornice before the ply is fixed to the ceiling.
Most reputable ceiling suppliers will offer detailed fitting instructions. If you lack experience in this area, you may prefer to employ someone with building experience. However, most metal ceilings are fitted by their owners. Tacking nails should be used initially until you are satisfied you have everything in its final position. Tacking nails are quite long and must only be partly nailed in so that they can be removed easily with pliers. When you are satisfied that everything is in the right spot then you can remove the tacking nails and finish the job off with small nails. Details of which nails to use should be in the manufacturers fitting instructions.

Painting your Metal Panels

Painting an ornate, aluminum ceiling in fine detail is easy because it is painted before it gets fixed to the ceiling. Most aluminum paneling is sold with etch primer already on it so it is immediately ready to paint. You can use one colour over the whole ceiling, you can add just a touch of colour on the moldings or you can can paint every detail in various shades of paint. The patterns in aluminum ceilings are more deeply pressed than other types of ceilings so they create lovely shadows themselves just from electric light or from natural daylight. Accordingly most people use one colour of paint over the whole ceiling. It is strongly recommended that pale shades of paint be used. Darker colours can be appealing in theory but in practice they can often give a heavy oppressive feel to a room. Oil based paints are recommended. If the nails are still visible you can dob each one with a little paint.

Are Sun Rooms Safe?

Most Americans prefer having a roof deck in their homes just so they can have their private tanning sessions. Others opt for sun rooms or solariums to get that sought-after tan.

The concept of a solarium or sun room has changed over the years, from the rooftop solarium of a house as it is known in Rome to the castle roof solarium as it was known during the medieval period. During the olden times, solariums were typically located at the upper floor of the house, usually with large windows surrounding the room to welcome sunlight.

Solariums were not really made for tanning then, because medieval women used the solariums as their nook where they spend hours gossiping and exchanging pleasantries.

During the modern times, the sun rooms became more extravagant and elegant. Today, sun rooms are built surrounded by window glasses. Some sun rooms are even built with walls made of glass. Sun rooms today are also used by the family members as a relaxation area where they can entertain visitors or host parties. Today, sun rooms are also built to serve as greenhouses where exotic plants are kept and grown.

The concept of using sun rooms as tanning rooms is relatively new but it has attracted homeowners who find the idea practical. Instead of going to tanning shops or spas, there are home owners who buy use the sun rooms for personal tanning sessions.

Solariums or sun rooms are more popular during summer when the whole household can avail of in-house tanning services. Some get their own portable beds and stay in their sun rooms the rest of the day.

Having your own sub room can be practical and cost effective. It can save you time and money in going to tanning salons. However, people who use sun rooms for tanning purposes should be aware of the dangers of too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Even if you are just in you sun room, you have to make sure you are protected by wide-brimmed hats. To be more practical about it, use sun protecting creams or sunscreens with higher protection level. The common belief is that a person does not need sunscreen if he is jus tin the confines of his home. Of course, a sun room is just within your home but you are getting more sun exposure there so you have to protect your skin and your eyes.

You can enjoy your sun rooms but do not endanger your health by enjoying your sun rooms without proper protection.

Are Black Molds Toxic?

The term “toxic mold” is not accurate. While certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins), the molds themselves are not toxic, or poisonous. Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house. There is always a little mold everywhere – in the air and on many surfaces. There are very few reports that toxigenic molds found inside homes can cause unique or rare health conditions such as pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss.

These case reports are rare, and a causal link between the presence of the toxigenic mold and these conditions has not been proven. A common-sense approach should be used for any mold contamination existing inside buildings and homes. The common health concerns from molds include hay fever-like allergic symptoms. Certain individuals with chronic respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, asthma) may experience difficulty breathing. Individuals with immune suppression may be at increased risk for infection from molds.

If you or your family members have these conditions, a qualified medical clinician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment. For the most part, one should take routine measures to prevent mold growth in the home.

Mold spores occur in the indoor and outdoor environments. Mold spores may enter your house from the outside through open doorways, windows, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with outdoor air intakes. Spores in the air outside also attach themselves to people and animals, making clothing, shoes, bags, and pets convenient vehicles for carrying mold indoors.

When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.

Stachybotrys chartarum (also known by its synonym Stachybotrys atra) is a greenish-black mold. It can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth. It is not necessary, however, to determine what type of mold you may have. All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal.

People with allergies may be more sensitive to molds. People with immune suppression or underlying lung disease are more susceptible to fungal infections.

An ideal bedroom. Part2.

At will you can finish bedroom walls with wood, cloth, veneer sheet or cork. Natural materials are distinguished by the characteristic structure and color, they do not have cheerless monotony and always look warm and lively, which is especially topical for creating comfort in the bedroom.
Partially the image of the bedroom is defined by color that dominates in its setting.

Blue or dark blue plunge you into the thoughts of coolness and sky space. Green tones are associated with spring, freshness, they favor relaxation, but their emotional restraint requires active support from warm colors. Beautiful combinations are made as a result of combining pale shades with rich, saturated color and light.

Yellow gamma is like sun rays, it warms and animates the room, but it is recommended that vast yellow surfaces are freshened with fragments of other saturated colors. It is better to soften orange by combining it with cool key of gray-blue or one can experiment with its pale shades. Red is considered “to cheer up”, but it is difficult to wake up in such a bedroom. It is better to use red colors as a light accent.

Violet is deep and expressive, especially in combination with mild yellow or green background. Ascetic black-and-white gamma is actively used in popular minimalist stylizations. But the best decision for bedroom is thought to be shades of white that remind of baked milk or soft gray that approaches the color of flax linen. Effective are combinations of light and dark, weak and saturated colors.

Textile plays the dominant role in the decorative finishing of the bedroom, even more so because cloth decorations are can be easily replaced at will. The chief textile topic of the bedroom is connected with finishing of the window and the bed. The surface of walls and floor in this case serves as background: monotonous walls harmonize with variegated cloths with saturated colors; patterned wallpapers or a gay carpet, conversely, match one-color textile. However, interesting can be also the decision, when textile and walls are covered with one pattern. Upon basically finishing the bedroom, one can proceed to curtains.

Usually they are made from soft, well-draped clothes. The ideal variant is curtains of medium thickness that disperse intense daylight and soften light contrasts. If the window is on the sunny side, it is better to complement light curtains with thick ones, small screen rollers or Venetian blinds. The shape and pattern of the curtains can change the proportions of the window and influence the geometry of the room.

A small embrasure in the spacious wall can be visually increased by means of covering the whole window wall with curtains. You should avoid using cloth with big pattern in a small bedroom with a great window opening, as this will even more diminish the room. While choosing cloth for curtains, you should also consider a bedspread and bed-clothes. The easiest thing is to make bed-spread from the same cloth, as the curtains, and bed-clothes – by one or two tones lighter. A more original decision is a complex combination of cloths with different patterns and various textures, which reflect light in a different way. Bed-clothes can be combined in the following way: a one-color sheet that matches the general coloring of the bedroom plus multicolored pillow-cases and blanket cover. Have you decided on the planning, style, materials, color and textile? The next stage is choosing the lighting.

It is better to avoid direct, open, collimated light in the bedroom, because it creates deep shadows. Disperse light can be achieved with the help of lamp-shades, plafonds from suffused glass or mosaics – it is the so-called general, orientating light. And finally, it is impossible to imagine a bedroom without accent lighting: table, wall and floor night-lamps, built-in or hung up in the head bed lamps. They calm down and tune in for sleep. These are some brief pieces of advice in design of “intimate space” of your house. Of course, advice is not a dogma, but it should be taken into the account, when you get to bedroom in your fantasies about repair-work.

An ideal bedroom. Part1.

In special terminology bedroom is referred to as “the intimate space”, i.e. the place that is not intended for others’ glances. However, the bedroom in a modern apartment-studio can be only conditionally separated from other zones by light constructive elements: arches, columns, sliding partitions, screens, etc.

According to the tradition, bedroom is isolated and is placed in one of the far and noiseless parts of the apartment, but at will one can also arrange here a workplace that won’t allow the premises to “stand idle” in the daytime, or the drawing-room.
In the apartment with high ceilings one can make the entresol and place the bed on the second level. As a result, there will appear some additional space for arranging workplace or cloakroom. (By the way, the place to store clothes is one of the main elements of bedroom. Even if it is possible to arrange a separate cloakroom, it would better place it adjacent to the bedroom. A small cloakroom can be separated from the bedroom by the rigid, but light mobile partitions that are commonly used for organizing of fitted cupboards).

One of the original decisions is the podium-case. For this the dais is built in the room and the bed is mounted inside of it. Boxes for bedclothes are placed on the sides. In the case of need the bed easy moves out on rollers.

The podium area can be used as cabinet (the workplace), library, etc. Such planning of the room empties space for area of recreation (drawing-room).

Not less original is the bedroom in the “Eastern” style.

In this case the bed is replaced by the mattress, which, with a help of the carpet, is transferred into the couch with many pillows, when it is necessary to transfer the room into the drawing-room.

Convenient and functional is the version of the bed-transformer that can be risen vertically and hidden, upon necessity, in special fitted cupboard. Finally, one can make zoning with the help of partitions (for example, in the form of the fitted cupboard), sliding doors, but better do with through rack structure or screen. They visually separate one zone from another, do not prevent the access of the light and air and create the feeling of the open space. Additionally you get shelves for books, files or your favorite collection. When you plan bedroom, first of all, you ought to think about the location of the bed.

Usually the head of the bed is put right against to one of the walls. But if you consider it important to orient the resting body along the east-west axis, the bed can be placed freely relatively to walls.

If the bedroom sizes permit, a wide bed can be placed far from walls. In such a way you can create the peculiar “sleepy island”, particularly if the bed is round. The special atmosphere for sleep can be created by the canopy. It is a weighty construction that consists of the massive framework, awning and bed curtains. The root of such decision is in our subconsciousness that requires protected, even symbolically, place for sleep.

One often uses such method as rising of the place for sleep to the “podium”. Its construction looks like the podium, even sometimes with several steps. The bulk paddy mattress is freely put on it.

The ingenious decorative method is the location of the bed in the niche that can be marked out by the contrasting to the whole interior decorating. It will be nice, if it is possible to design the bedroom with a separate bath that is intended only for owners of the bedroom. Then not only sanitary engineering, but also the dressing table with autonomous illuminated adjustable mirrors will be placed there.

The stylistic decision of the bedroom can be quite different from other rooms.

Solemnity and pathos, which are relevant for the guest segment of the house, are extra here, the atmosphere of personal quarters is to promote relaxation and distraction from everyday concerns, everything should tune you in for rest.

The character of your bedroom, that psychological mood that it causes, greatly depends on the finishing agents, and remarkably, not only their decorative, but also their practical qualities shape the enveloping atmosphere. Generally, people strive to use noise-insulating materials for bedrooms. It is preferable that walls are textural and noise-absorbing. A wonderful material for finishing of the walls is wallpapers. It is better if the surface does not yield blinks, because this is rather tiresome.

Just a regular washing of the patio cover will do the trick and keep it looking new.

Along with the Alumawood do it yourself patio covers, you get matching color fasteners. Simply reading the directions before you start will show you that this is something that you can do yourself. These aluminum awnings are easy to install and come with a lifetime warranty. Each of the do it yourself kits for installing an Alumawood patio cover is available in five different colors. The kit for the aluminum awning or patio cover also contains the support beam, rafter beams, lattice tubes and posts.

The components of the aluminum awnings that you can install yourself are all interconnecting. This will make the installation process quite simple and the only help you will need is to have someone hand the pieces to you as you put them in place. It won’t take you long to have the Alumawood patio cover in place and then you can sit back and enjoy your new living space. With aluminum awnings, you won’t realize what you have been missing until you get the first one installed.

Alternative To Rat Poison

Mechanical rat traps are one possible alternative to poisons; another alternative is to buy a cat, although cats capable of dealing with rats are relatively rare; in many cultures, hunting dogs have been used instead. Both of these methods have a disadvantage of being comparatively messy, a particular problem when the building with a rat problem is to be uninhabited for some months. Anticoagulants have the advantage that their first effect is dehydration from blood loss, causing the unfortunate rodent to leave the building in search of water.

Newer rodenticides have been developed to work with by reducing the sperm count in males to deprive them of the ability to procreate rather than to kill rodents outright. They are usually administered in the breeding seasons of most rodents.

ABOUT THOSE SERINE PROTEASES:

Clotting factors are identified by number and the serine proteases (also called K-dependent factors for reasons which are about to become clear) are factors II, VII, IX, and X. These factors are produced in an inactive state by the liver and go happily circulating through the bloodstream awaiting activation. When a vessel tears and it becomes necessary to form a clot, these factors are activated in a process that requires Vitamin K (a fat soluble vitamin not as famous as its fat-soluble cousins Vitamins A and E). As the clotting factors are activated, Vitamin K is inactivated but later recycled by another set of enzymes to be ready to participate in clotting factor activation again later.

As long as there is plenty of Vitamin K, the serine proteases can be activated and clotting can proceed normally.

The anticoagulant rodenticides abolish Vitamin K recycling. This means that as soon as one’s active Vitamin K reserves are depleted, there can be no meaningful blood clotting.

In cases of poisoning one would expect symptoms to be nearly immediate but in the case of anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, it takes several days to deplete Vitamin K. After that, even the smallest of jostles and traumas can lead to life-threatening bleeds.

Alternative Cooling

My favorite alternative cooling device is a gin and tonic. It’s portable, easy to operate and provides instant on-demand refreshment.

Is there such a thing as a Tanqueray energy tax credit?

Although you can install solar panels, a wind turbine or micro hydro to generate the electricity to run an air conditioner, the only true whole house alternative cooling method is a geothermal ground source pump.

The cost of this type of system can be recouped in as little as two years on a new house installation, but the initial capital outlay is more than most homeowners can afford.

Let’s say you re-mortgage your house for $20,000 and you have a choice between a new kitchen and a geothermal heat pump; how many new heat pumps have your neighbors been showing off lately?

Less expensive options to consider:

Weatherization

The only people who haven’t learned the value of caulking, weather stripping and insulating yet are living in caves or tents.
Fans
Ceiling, paddle, and portable fans produce air motion across your skin that increases evaporative cooling. A moderate breeze of one to two miles an hour can extend your comfort range by several degrees.

Whole House Fans and Evaporative (Swamp) Coolers
These devices can reduce your air conditioning costs by 50% or more but are only effective if you live in a dry climate (less than 40%humidity).

White Roofing

Elastomeric roof coatings reflect 90% of the sun’s rays and will reduce the indoor temperature by 7 degrees according the independent research laboratory MER Corporation. These coatings are for flat roofs and cost around .50 per square foot to apply.

Radiant Barriers

These shiny, reflective barriers keep excess heat out of your attic in the summer or keeping your floors warm in the winter. Stapled under the rafters or joists, it reflects 97 of the radiant heat that strikes it. The non-profit Florida Solar Energy Center has shown that an attic radiant barrier can reduce air conditioning costs by at least 20%.

Air Conditioners

Clean the filter once a month. Turn off your A/C when you leave for more than an hour. It saves money. Draw the shades while you’re at work. Close off unused rooms or, if you have central A/C, close the registers in those rooms and shut the doors.

Set your A/C thermostat at 78°F—or higher if you have ceiling fans. For each degree you raise the thermostat, you’ll save 3%-5% on cooling costs.

If you want to make a fortune in alternative cooling, invent an air conditioner that runs on corn.

All Time Favorites – Iron Railings

Iron railing has been in vogue for the last many centuries and has not gone out of fashion even then. The popularity is due to long life. Read al about iron railings in the article.

Traditional Yet Modern – Iron Railings

Iron railings have been used since the start of industrial revolution in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. At that time, the metallurgy was still an art and not an exact science as it is today. Being the work of art, it was costly to have iron railings and only the rich could afford the wrought iron and cast iron railings. The technique of welding was non-existent and metal joining was only be heating and hammering together or riveting.

The iron railings may be classified as wrought iron railings, cast iron railings or the steel railings. Stainless steel railings were non-existent in seventeenth century.

Now after the fashion has gone through many iterations the iron railings have never got out of fashion since the life of the iron railings is more than the life cycle of fashions. Iron railings will never go out of fashion any time.

The metal used in railings was primarily iron although the rich and the kings used other metals including gold for railings inside the houses.

Metal Used In Iron Railings

Wrought Iron railings: Wrought iron railings were made be a laborious process of heating the pieces of iron to red-hot heat and hammering out the pieces of the railings to the required shape and size. The work was labor intensive and only those artistic tendencies and the ability to work hard were able to make the wrought iron railings. Since the artists are never hard workers, and vice versa, the supply was limited, and hence the prices were very high.

Cast iron railings: The cast iron railings were made by melting the iron and casting the hot iron into molds. The molds were made from sand and used for making cast iron railings. The railings were fragile and if one breaks, it was virtually impossible at that time to repair the broken railing. It had to be handled with care and not many would go for the cast iron railing except the rich persons.

Mild steel railings: The mild steel made its appearance some where in the eighteenth century and was immediately popular material for fencing and railing. The pieces could be cold worked and joined by riveting. The cold working was the major advantage and this increased its use for everything including the used for railings.

Advances in Iron Railings

Advances in welding technology changes the way we used iron for railings. Now it was possible to bend the iron rods in shapes that were hitherto unimaginable and it was possible to join them with welding. The welding technology also made it possible for us to reduce the weight and cost without reducing the strength. As the iron rods were weldable, the repair also became easy.

Now it is possible to make railings out of plates and bend them into shapes as required. The material remains the same old iron but now the form can be changed to make it look more attractive and maintenance free. Stainless steel is utilized for this purpose in increasing quantities, and the stainless steel looks more elegant and requires no maintenance at all (other than regular cleaning).

Thus, iron railings have given way to stainless steels and it is being increasing used for all railing related work.

Advice On Home Renovation And Home Improvement

Making improvements to your home, or to any property that you own, is bound to give you some return on your investment. How much and how quickly relies mostly on the projects you choose to do and how you choose to do them. Using the ideas in this article you should be able to make smart decisions when it comes to your home repairs.

A good home improvement tip is to make sure the company you’re doing business with is legit. If a company doesn’t give you a physical address and only conducts business over the phone, that means they’re probably small time and aren’t very reputable. Try to go with companies that have a strong reputation.

Check the credentials of any professional you employ for any home improvement projects. You want to make sure that they are qualified to be completing the work they are taking on, and that it will be done right with the highest standards in place. You can avoid many mishaps by checking professional credentials.

When you set up your vanity lights in your bathroom, pay close attention to the shadows they cast. You don’t want to have your vanity lights set up in such a way that it is difficult to see what you are doing or in such a way that you appear to be veiled in shadows when you look in the mirror. Your vanity lights should be positioned in a way that provides a clear, usable working light.

When looking to replace counter tops, go with granite. Most granite is attractive looking, durable, reasonably priced and is able to withhold hot products. Also, because it is so hard, it will not scratch, blister, or crack. It is easy to clean and does not wear down like other counter tops.

If you are renovating a small space, and you have the ability, install larger windows. Even if you cannot expand the window size, use a style of window that has more glass than wooden frame. More glass in the window will mean it lets in more natural light, which makes a small room seem much brighter and larger.

To add appeal to your home and increase its value, consider replacing your existing shingles with architectural shingles. Also known as dimensional shingles, these shingles can simulate the textures of natural substances like slate or wood, and they resist wind better than regular shingles, making them an ideal choice if your home is located in a region that sees high winds.

Are you considering a home improvement project? Are you trying to decide whether to do the job yourself or hire it out? One thing to take in consideration is the time value of your efforts. What is the dollar value of the time that you would have put into this project, worth to you? Compare this dollar value to what it would cost to hire the work out.

Using the ideas presented here to make decisions about how, when and why you are going to make remodeling changes or updates to your home or investment property, will net you a greater return on your investment and give you some leeway in making greater gains in your home equity.

Advice On Asbestos Disposal

Did William Daniel have proper advice on asbestos disposal?

This resident of Ohio was fined $22,600, ordered to perform 208 hours of community service and was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment on 21 Feb 2002 for violating the Clean Air Act. Daniel had improperly disposed 469 bags of asbestos waste thereby causing a grave danger to public health.

Condition of Asbestos is a Major Factor in its Disposal:

Depending on condition, we can divide asbestos into two major groups.

Friable – that which can crumble by hand pressure such as insulation

Non-friable – that which will not crumble under hand pressure such as asbestos sheets in good condition.

If the asbestos is in a non-friable condition, we can leave it as it is. Safety will further improve by painting the surface and edges with a sealing paint that will not allow fibers to escape. Smoothening the edges or surface will release fibers and is dangerous. Friable asbestos has significant risk of breaking up during handling and needs special care. You should seek adequate advice on asbestos disposal before disposing this dangerous contaminant.

General Advice on Asbestos Disposal:

If you are unsure whether your appliance contains asbestos, it is best to contact the manufacturer directly and ask. Giving the model and year of manufacture would help. Ask for specialist advice on asbestos disposal if your appliances contain asbestos. You can use the yellow pages to locate manufacturers and people offering asbestos disposal services and advice.

Disposing small quantities of household asbestos is straight forward, but if quantities are large then consult professional disposal agents. They will observe all laws and will dispose the asbestos in authorized sites only.

The key element of the disposal process lies in ensuring that fibers do not separate and fly into the air. Towards this end, experts advise that we dispose asbestos on a humid and a calm day and reduce the numbers of people involved to the bare minimum. Any dismantling of structures would provide opportunity for the fiber to separate and fly. While dismantling, keep the asbestos sheet wet with soap water to reduce dust and fiber.

After separating the asbestos, you should pack it in heavy gauge plastic sheets. Smaller pieces can be stored in two layers of polythene bags. Any residual dust or small pieces can be picked up using a wet cloth and stored in double plastic packets. You should use similar disposal method for clothes used in the asbestos removal process.

As we said above, so long as we observe common sense precautions in accordance with advice on asbestos disposal and ensure that fibers do not contaminate surroundings and the quantities involved are small, there is no danger of running foul of the Law. However, it is essential that we are aware of the “Clean Air Act” and similar laws before disposing of large quantities of asbestos. William Daniel may have served out his sentence, but the next judge may well be stricter.

* Please note that Mr. Done Right doesn’t do asbestos removal or handle asbestos in any manner.  However, after asbestos removal please do call Mr. Done Right for any remodeling work you may need.

Advice For Home Improvement Made Easy

You have always wanted to find out about, or possibly enhance your current knowledge of, home improvement and have scoured the Internet for information to help you. The tips and tricks we provide in this article, when followed as suggested, should help you to either improve on what you have already done or help you start off well.

Insulate your home in order to save energy and lower your heating and cooling bills. Check the attic, as well as windows and doors. Any leaky spots should be fixed. Weather stripping can be added to doors and windows and new insulation can be added to the attic. You want to keep air that you paid to heat or cool, inside the home.

To properly stain your deck yourself, be sure that you use the proper tools to do so starting with the brushes you use to apply the stain. If you choose a oil based stain, a natural bristle brush is the way to go. When using a stain that is water based use a brush with nylon bristles.

Consider the materials that you are going to use when building an addition or a separate structure on your property: Wood framed structures are going to cost you more to insure because of how flammable they are. Steel or cement framed structures will save you a good bit in home insurance premiums.

When you are replacing your siding with veneer some positive things to keep in mind about that material are the functional advantages to other sidings. The veneers can protect your home quite well from damages, they are very easy to install, and require little to almost no maintenance which is very important.

If a natural disaster has recently occurred and you need to hire a contractor you need to be careful. There are some shady characters who wait for emergency situations to occur and then take advantage of those that are unsuspecting and who have a trusting heart. Do research before you hire someone to do repairs on your home.

To remove nicks or scratches from kitchen cabinets, recondition the wood with oil, and then install new handles or knobs. Another option is to replace just the doors or door fronts. This is a little work but far cheaper than completely re-facing your cabinets, and your kitchen will get a brand new look.

When you are starting a home improvement project, make sure you realize all the steps entailed. Make a step by step list of tasks you need to complete to finish the project so you understand and are ready for all the work ahead of you. Also, plan the completion date a week after you think you will be done with the project to give yourself time to correct any mistakes.

To summarize, there is quite a bit to learn about home improvement. Do not be overwhelmed though, because there is a lot to take in. Depending on your situation, either your continued success or the start of a new challenge is dependent solely on your willingness to learn and also the personal commitment that you invest.

Advantages Of Portable Swamp Evaporative Coolers

A swamp evaporative cooler can give you the best of cooling technologies without the disadvantages of air conditioning. Unlike air conditioners, swamp evaporative coolers require very little energy in order to work well, as long as the appropriate environmental conditions are met. Speaking of the environment, evaporative coolers are pollutant free because they work using nature’s own cooling mechanism.

The term swamp evaporative cooler is a bit misleading because an evaporative cooler actually has nothing to do with a swamp and in fact, wouldn’t work in swamp-like conditions. An evaporative cooler works the same way that cooling happens in nature, and the same way that our bodies cool themselves; by evaporation. If you’ve ever lived in a coastal climate or near a large body of water, you’re already familiar with evaporative cooling. You’ll have noticed that breezes coming off of the water are cooler than those coming from an inland direction. The reason for this is simple.

Nature always moves towards a state of equilibrium. So when a cooler area and a warmer area come into contact, the two temperatures will move towards each other and try to equal out. As warm, dry air passes over a body of water, it evaporates some of the water and is cooled by it. This same idea is reproduced in a swamp evaporative cooler. Hot, dry air from outside is pulled into the cooler by a fan. That air is pulled through a series of damp pads, where it absorbs water that has the effect of reducing the air’s temperature. As an added benefit, the pads also filter or clean the air as it passes through. Then the cooler, cleaner air is blown through into the room or office that you are cooling. In fact, the cooler keeps the air circulating in a room, meaning that you feel even cooler due to the slight breeze that the swamp evaporative cooler creates.

So in order for a swamp evaporative cooler to work efficiently, it needs to be used in a hot, dry climate. If your climate is more humid, an evaporative cooler is probably not the best choice for you. But where these coolers do work well, they work very well. They also save users money and energy. Some users have even had evaporative coolers converted so that they will work on solar power. Energy savings can be so significant that energy companies in states like California will offer rebates to clients who choose to install a whole-house swamp evaporative cooler.

Advantages Of Metal Railings

Metal Railing – Convenience And Durability

The article gives the advantage of metal railing over the other materials and the different types of metals in which the railings can be made. Metal railings have inherent advantages over other materials like PVC, wood glass etc. The advantages can be enumerated as follows.

Small and lightweight sections can be made to suit purpose.
No rot or splintering like wood railings
Designs can be personalized with relative ease.
Can be made from casting or flat product to suit your style and budget
They are more durable than the wood or PVC even in out door conditions
Once given a coat of powder-coated paint, it becomes long lasting and life in excess of 25 to 30 years can be achieved.

Requires no maintenance other than wiping off with a wet cloth

The Metals in Common Use In Railings

Many metals are used in making railings. The common materials used are,

Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is the most commonly use material in railing. This is because of its large weight to strength ratio and the ability to retail luster for long time with no maintenance and also due the fact that it does not corrode. The workability of stainless steel is high and it can pass through power presses without damage. It gives a modern look to the building

Wrought iron: Another common material used in railing is wrought iron. This material gives a period look to the building. The weight of the railings made out of wrought iron is high. The maintenance requirements are almost nil. A coat of paint applied properly, will make look as new and no further care other than cleaning is required. If there is a breakage, it is difficult to weld and has to be replaces. The replacement may not be available in the same design

Aluminum: Lightweight and durable, aluminum is suitable for straight lines and square shapes. The workability of aluminum is low and where lines are curved, aluminum is generally not preferred. Maintenance requirements are the same as stainless steel and aluminum has a long life

Brass used to be a favored material for the rich and famous in the medieval times. This material has lost its place in the railing industry and now it is rarely used except as a covering for railing. The covering is maintenance prone in the sense that it requires to be polished frequently to make it look new.

Therefore, out of the four materials mentioned above, only stainless steel finds extensive use in modern buildings.

Addition To Coolness

To the budget conscious people, an air conditioner is not a wise alternative in a room especially during the summer. There is always the standard stand or desk fan or using fan or just plain opening the window.

A wise addition to a room, which is both, cost efficient and stylish is a ceiling fan. This is preferred especially when your aim is keep one room cool. The ceiling fan functions by moving the both cool and warm air around the room, which would really aid in making the room comfortable.

Ceiling fans has gained popularity as a fan of choice in homes. They are popular because they can be both stylish and very useful. Also, most ceiling fans are within the budget.

In shopping for your new ceiling fan it is important that you look at various brands. Check essential features such as the pitch of the blade, the size of the motor and the finishes on the surfaces of the ceiling fan.

Note: don’t hesitate to ask for help from the salesperson to help you with selecting the ceiling fan that suits you needs.

Ceiling Fans Saves Money

Many people save a lot of money because of using ceiling fans instead of air conditioners. However, this will depend in a lot of different factors. An important factor is the type of blade used. The material and weight of the blade would be determine if the ceiling fan’s lifetime. High-end ceiling fans are usually made of plywood and weighed accordingly to prevent wobbling. Low-end ceiling fans are usually made of cardboard and can be observed to have slight wobbling.

Ceiling Fans Saves Energy

In addition to the practicality of using ceiling fans, it is also very productive in cooling. The fan pushes the warm air that has risen back into the room. In turn, the thermostat will not turn on the heating system.

Essentials

Remember that the greater the pitch and the more revolutions per minute, the more efficient the fan is in cooling and heating. The smaller motors may seem fine at first but could possibly produce annoying sounds when she’s done.

Fan size depends on the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. Usually specifications come with the purchase of the fan. A fan dealer can help you select fans for your room. For high ceilings sometimes a downrod is needed. For sloped ceilings, flush mounts and angled mounts are available. Some ceilings must even be braced to support the additional weight of the ceiling fan.

Whatever the theme of your house or room may be there will be fan for you. Ceiling fan have been available since the late 1800’s. Today ceiling fans are specifically made for hallways, patios or even children’s bedroom.

The fan is usually hung in the middle of the room. This gives the best air circulation compared to any corner of the room.

Putting lights are optional. Some people attach glass globes or bulbs that will provide the needed illumination in the room. If the ceiling is low, lights cannot be added.

Addiction Recovery And Home Improvement

Have you just recovered from addiction? One very
effective tip for addiction recovery is home
improvement. When you say home improvement, it is not
just about improving the physical arrangement of the
house.

If you want complete recovery, you need to improve
your whole life, from mind and body, to the spirit.
The recovery journey may be jeopardized if you can’t
tune the whole body properly.

Recovering addicts often overlook small details such
as methodologies to control cravings, triggers, and
building support systems. Relapse can occur if you
continuously overlook these things. Think about this
carefully and the effects that it can have on you.

A very typical example is planning to repaint the
house. You can’t possibly repaint the house if you
forgot to buy paint. You will not get any work done.
You should always keep in mind the true meaning of
addiction recovery.

Addiction recovery is not just about the instructions
and words given to you by the doctor and support
groups. You must be able to act properly and follow
everything you’ve learned about addiction and
recovery.

There are certain techniques taught to recovering
patients. These techniques should be observed and
practiced everyday so that you will get used to it and
it will already be part of your day to day routine.

Observation is not enough because unless you learn to
apply the recovery techniques that you’ve learned,
nothing will change. The recovery process will go
smoothly if you act properly.

Start with some simple home improvements. You can
redecorate your room or any other room in the house.
If you haven’t done some general cleaning, maybe this
is the best time to start cleaning. Get help from
other family members.

You can repaint the walls if you like. Just make sure
that everything you need is accessible and handy.
Before you start making home improvements, make a plan
first so that the job will be done in no time.

Aside from making home improvements, this is also the
best time to introduce some house rules. The house
rules should be followed by all family members
including you. Gather around as a family and talk to
each other.

You can set the house rules and inform everybody so
that it can be followed and implemented immediately.
Making some changes at home with some rules to follow
will be much easier for the entire family.

It was mentioned earlier that home improvement is not
just about improving the home alone. You also have to
improve your lifestyle. Get rid of your negative life
practices and start out on a clean slate. Practice
healthy eating habits and forget about your vices.

The household chores can be divided among the family
members so that each member will know the importance
of helping one another. If you can do these things at
home, then you can say that you’ve made some home
improvements.

Addiction and recovery will not be much of an issue
anymore with home improvement. Start making
improvements now and see what it can do to your life.
You can’t expect to change overnight and so the
changes can be introduced gradually.

If you introduce the changes everyday, you will soon
get used to it. The family will also appreciate the
changes at home. Don’t be discouraged if you encounter
some difficulties. Just continue with the home
improvement.

Add Some Light To Your Life With Candles

Candles first served as the main source of light for early civilization. They have made many changes through the years. The candles of today are not the same candles from hundreds of years ago.

Before the introduction of wicks, early Egyptians lit their reed torches by soaking them in molten tallow, which is fat from sheep or cattle. Romans later developed wick candles which they dipped into the tallow.

By the Middle Ages, beeswax was being used in the making of some candles. The candles burned cleaner than tallow and had a more pleasant odor than the tallow candles. However, they were more costly and only the wealthy could afford them.

In Colonial times, the settlers found they could boil berries from the bayberry bush to make a sweet smelling and clean burning wax for their candles. Unfortunately, it was tedious work and it took many berries to make just one candle.

By the 18th century, candles were being made from spermaceti, a wax which was crystallized sperm whale oil. These candles had an even better odor and would not bend and soften in warm weather.

In 1834, a machine was invented which mass produced molded candles. By 1850, we were using paraffin wax made from oil and coal shale. It was processed by distilling residues of crude petroleum refinement. Soon after, stearic acid was added to the paraffin wax and these are still the basic ingredients of today’s candles.

Today, we have many kinds of candles to choose from. We have candles in all different shapes, sizes, and scents. Not only do candles add soft light to our home décor, they also add tantalizing aromas which can affect our moods. We have many aromatherapy candles to help us feel better. And how about those candles which bring back childhood memories—There’s nothing like a deliciously scented chocolate chip cookie or apple cinnamon candle to warm up your kitchen on a cold winter day!

Acquiring Construction Equipment

Many companies and contractors in need of acquiring new or used construction equipment often don’t have the financial resources needed to buy the construction equipment outright, unless it is a large corporation or some branch of the government. This is when the option of renting or leasing construction equipment comes into play. Deciding to rent or lease often depends on what the contractor or business manager feels most comfortable doing from a financial perspective after evaluating the many possibilities and deciding what suits their need from long term leasing to short term renting. The side of construction equipment rentals has met a positive growth since 2004, where nearly 50% of construction equipment dealers’ are offering heavy equipment rentals as part of their operation.

There are two ways most companies acquire their construction equipment, renting or leasing. Many contractors or business managers viewed renting or leasing as an opportunity to test out construction equipment at no extra cost and with no strings attached with the possibility of buying. Most often the rental would be converted into a purchase to avoid losing the invested equity. Most buyers would also take into account whether their business is flourishing or floundering, before committing to buying any construction equipment. In a case where a business has an uncertain future, the potential buyers may deem renting as the best way economically and then return the construction equipment to its owner when the job is done.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is the international trade and business development resource for companies that manufacture equipment, products and services used worldwide in the construction, agricultural, mining, forestry, and utility fields. The AEM has conducted a survey that predicted that in the near future, more construction equipment buyers will turn to the Internet for product purchases; as construction equipment buyers increasingly turn to the Internet for transactions, information and support.

Consequently, the rise of on-line auctions, sales, renting and leasing are made available by a variety of merchants who cater to the needs of companies and contractors worldwide. On-line merchants such as: Machine Mart, Rock & Dirt, Machinery Trader, Iron Planet, Contractors Hotline, etc. are only a few of the leading markets where companies and contractors alike can find nearly every piece of construction equipment they are looking for, from the top manufacturers such as Caterpillar and John Deere to many more. Many of these merchants offer the options of buying, selling, renting and leasing of new and used construction equipment to parts service and repair and machine maintenance. It’s always wise to investigate the background of any merchant before you place a bid or purchase any construction equipment, to ensure a good reputable stand point before entering into a contract with any dealer or merchant. It’s always wise to shop around and compare deals on construction equipment to other offers before committing to any deal.

Achieving A Peaceful And Relaxed Home With Do-It-Yourself Indoor Fountains

Water fountains in indoor settings have become quite a buzzword among home decorators and owners like you in the last few years. This is not surprising, since indoor fountains give you a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, as the water quietly runs in the fountain. Stores can attest to the popularity of indoor fountains. A look at stores in malls and on the Internet results in a lot of indoor fountains being sold. But what happens if you can’t find your indoor fountain of your dreams in the malls or in the various websites? Do not fret. Actually, there are many of you that do not seem to find what they think are the right indoor fountains for them.

Having a beautiful and elegant indoor water fountain does not always have to be the same with what other people have just because you bought yours from a store or in the Internet. And, no, you don’t want to pay for a fountain with an extremely steep price just to avoid having a commonly owned fountain. Try doing it on your own. The sound of the trickling water from a fountain you did might prove to be more peaceful and relaxing than the mass-produced ones.

I. Build Your Own Indoor Fountain

If you can’t find an indoor fountain in the market that could match your personal taste, lifestyle, and uses, why not make your own? Making your own indoor fountain is cheaper than buying it in a store or online. Generally, making one would cost you around $40. There are a number of variations available in making your own water fountain, but the instructions in making one are very basic.

II. Materials

– for base, you could use a waterproof container
– aquarium pump that is submersible; easily available in garden centers or at fish stores
– copper pipe with diameter of half an inch
– easy-to-use pipe cutter that costs around $2.50 only
– silicone glue – when this dries up, the glue becomes clear
– two pieces of elbow joints
– reducer that goes on top of your pump
– t-bar
– a copper piece
– beautiful and appealing rocks which you will be using for your foundation to stabilize the fountain and make the foundation more sturdy

III. Building Steps:

1. Put the pump into your container

Since the pump hole is relatively smaller compared with copper fittings, you must add the reducer. By this time, you are prepared in putting the first arm of your copper foundation.

On the pipe’s outer edge, put some silicone. Then put together the pieces one by one. Before putting the top pipe over it, you must have some holes pre-drilled. You can pre-drill using a drill bit with a one-eighth-inch size. This will make your fountain have the perfect flow. You must remember all the time that the copper frame size should fit snugly into your container, allowing the water to freely circulate.

2. Check if its top part is aligned

The top part is aligned if the water perfectly flows right into your container. Expect that the final arm will be longer since the pump will elevate it. Place the joint first, as this will make the arm secured. Measure then the pipe. Cut down the excess part.

3. Keep it stabilized

Adding a number of beautiful and large stones should make the weight heavier. After putting the large stones, put some small river pebbles. And then add water.

4. Go From There

Now you have the basic foundation for your indoor fountain! From there, you can design it based on your imagination, for the look of your fountain is limitless and depends on how imaginative and creative you can get. For just starters, you could improve your fountain look by putting dried flowers and grasses. Arrange them. If you plan on installing a fountain right inside your kitchen, you might want this example. You could create your base foundation using a used or old copper pan. Flatten it using a hammer. Then suspend the flatware using copper wire.

Accessory Checklist For Stairlifts

Accessories You May Purchase For Your Stairlift Product

You know how cars are always adorned by all sorts of accessories, right? Men go ga-ga over the bling-blings for their wheels, almost the same way women go crazy over belts, brooches and the sorts.

Well, for stairlifts, the primary purpose these accessories serve is safety and comfort and not design. Stairlifts may already be costly as they are, but it would still do you good to purchase accessories to ensure the well being of your loved ones.

Frame type Sit And Stand – If the stairlift product that’s to be installed at your house would be used by more than one person, perhaps it’s better to purchase a sit and stand frame for your stairlifts, especially when neither have the same health problems. With this type of frame for your stairlifts, the user or passenger may be able to either sit or stand while he/she climbs up and down the stairs.

Seatbelt – Yes, just like when you’re riding a roller coaster or your ordinary Ford truck, it’s always advisable to wear a seatbelt…just in case anything happens. You can choose between a seatbelt that would be wrapped around your lap – the manufacturers describe it as an inertia reel lap harness – or one that would strap both your shoulders – this time, referred to as static type, 3 point fixing over shoulder harness. Either way, as long as you have a seatbelt for your stairlift, the chances of risking injury are less likely.

Hinged Rail – In a small or compact sized house where there’s little space available, stairlifts with hinged rails are quite ideal because you could fold the lower part of the rail when it’s not in use. This is also ideal if your stairway is right next to the doorway and the lower part of the rail of the stairlift just serves as another obstruction.

Power Folding Footrest – Let’s just say that you have a mighty big house and even with the dough rolling in nonstop, you still prefer to install stairlifts instead of an elevator, no matter that there’s about twenty feet worth of stairs to climb up and down.

Wouldn’t it be nice for the passenger to have a footrest while they’re traveling from the East to the West Coast? But seriously though, the footrest for the stairlifts can also be handy for users or passengers who have problems bending down.

Power Swivel Seat – This is more for the comfort of passengers as they enter and exit the stairlifts.

About Creating Mosaic Countertops

Creating a real tile mosaic on almost any surface top is easy. The first step would be to look in a tile shop and see what is available. Then decide on a pattern you want.

There are many books, magazines and TV shows that give step by step instructions as well as design ideas. After deciding a pattern or design, sketch your pattern on the surface you are going to tile over. The first step is to prepare the surface making sure the tile will adhere. You do this by scoring the surface with a utility knife then coating the surface with a mixture of watered down white glue. Next you take tile cement, commonly known as thin set or mortar, and spread a thin coating over the surface. Place your tiles in the cement according to the pattern you drew. After the cement has set, (don’t be in too big of a hurry) fill the gaps between the tiles with tile grout. Most people think grout is available only in white but if you look in a hardware store you’ll find many different colors of grout available. You apply the grout by simply troweling it over all of the seams between the individual tiles. Then wipe away the excess with a sponge.

Have you ever been in a cafe, restaurant or a friend’s house for that fact, and admired the mosaic tile on the tabletops or walls? Well, it’s not that hard to bring that look into your own home. Where’s a good place to add a mosaic in your home? Kitchens and bathrooms are the obvious choices but end tables and patios have become favorites too. Consider embellishing a coffee table purchased from an unfinished furniture store. This is a great little week-end project. All you have to do is add a coat of paint and then make a small mosaic on the tabletop using some different size tiles or even broken tile pieces. This same technique works equally well for a larger area like this as it does for a small accent table.

Before starting this project, there are some things you should do first to be prepared.

Take some time researching what you want to do before you start laying tiles down. There are tons of books on ceramic tiles at your bookstore or library. A recommendation is to just thumb through them to get some inspiration for your design. Once you have a basic idea of what you want to do, it’s always a good idea to draw a sketch of your design.

Then you will want to place the actual tiles on the countertop, starting from the center and working outwards, to make sure your pleased with your design. Once you have everything in place, take a magic marker and mark the tiles’ location.

Before you cement the tiles in place, you have to prepare the tiles for the mosaic sections. How do you do that? This is where you can get some aggression out. Take a mix of tiles, wrap them in a towel and give them a whack. This is the simplest way to get the broken pieces of tile you’ll need for the mosaic. For the border mosaics you are going to need some smaller pieces of tile. For the smaller pieces you use a tile nibbler to break off pieces the size you need. To cement the tiles in place, use mortar that you can buy at any tile store or home improvement store. You just trowel the mortar on about 1/8th inch thick. Then use the edge of the trowel to score the mortar. Then just put your tiles in place. For the mosaic sections you use the same process. Take the different pieces of tile and arrange them however you like. Try and keep the spaces between the tiles to 1/8th of an inch.

How do you finish the project? You have to grout the tiles after the mortar has set up or dried. Remember, tile grout is available in many colors, not just white. Next smear the grout over the top of the tiles filling in the seams. To clean the tiles, wipe off any excess grout with a sponge. Let it dry overnight and you’re done so sit back and admire your work of art!

A Tutorial To Pumps

Pumps are amazing mechanical devices and an important invention. They are used to move gas or liquid from one pressure are to another pressure area. They are used in a variety of ways from providing water to providing heat to providing energy. Pumps have been around since the 3rd century and are still going strong today.

There are two main categories of pumps: positive displacement pumps and dynamic pumps. Positive displacement pumps have little leakage as they used sealed chambers to force the fluid or gas. Dynamic pumps use momentum to move the fluid or gas and the chambers are not sealed. In these two categories there are various types of pumps.

The following list explains the different types of pumps most commonly found in residential and industrial settings. These are a good representation of the many styles and models of pumps that are manufactured. Most pumps are made for a specific use and that is represented in this list as well.

– A centrifugal pump can handle a large load. They are used most often with oil or chemical processing. They have an impeller that forces the liquid or gas into a rotary motion. This rotary motion cause pressure to build.

– Electromagnetic pumps are made to move liquid sodium and potassium. They are used in the cooling systems of nuclear reactors. These pumps use electrical conductors and magnetic pipes.

– Jet Pumps use high velocity to move fluid. They require a jet of steam or water to carry the fluid through it. The jet pressure makes a vacuum that sucks more fluid. They are so powerful that they are most often used to move water from deep wells.

– A screw pump is also called a positive displacement pump. It is a widely used pump because it does not form clumps when pumping solids and keeps a constant speed.

These four pump types only represent a portion of the pumps on the market. They are, however, the most popular models.

Pumps are found in many environments. They range from industrial plants to a home water system. The way a pump works depends largely on the category of pump it is and the type of pump it is. The use is then based on these factors. All pumps work under the same principles, though. Pumps use pressure to move liquid or gas to a different location.

A Thermostat That Speaks To A Consumer’s Needs

If you have a question about how to make your home more comfortable, you may want to ask your thermostat. An innovative, programmable “talking” thermostat has been designed to make it easier for you to control your home comfort systems.

The EZ Talk feature of the “Talking Thermostat” from the Coleman® brand of York, a Johnson Controls Company, audibly guides homeowners through every step of programming a heating/cooling system thermostat. A Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning dealer can even customize the prerecorded messages in either a male or female voice.

If service is required, the thermostat can say the name and contact information of the dealer or contractor who installed the equipment. This provides homeowners with an easy, one-touch dealer locator that takes the guesswork out of who to call and saves time.

Separate weekday and weekend schedules allow you to set four different time/temperature settings each day, while a manual override feature makes it possible to change these settings. The thermostat is designed to protect your home comfort system with a number of alerts:

A low-battery warning informs you when it is time to change the batteries, helping to maintain the efficiency of the system.

In the event of a power outage, the backup battery saves the schedule and saves the homeowner from resetting the schedule.

The Talking Thermostat automatically turns on the heat at 40 degrees, even if the batteries are dead or not installed. This is a great feature for vacation homes or when you are on vacation or away from your house for a long time.

The Talking Thermostat reminds you when it is time to clean or replace a filter.

Another alert reminds you to perform annual maintenance and routine service to keep the system performing at optimum efficiency.

The user-friendly Talking Thermostat from Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning offers a number of additional features that will appeal to homeowners/tenants, including an easy-to-read, lighted LCD display that shows current temperature, set points and the heating or cooling mode of operation.

A Review of Prominent Circuit Breaker Manufacturers

The following article provides a review of prominent circuit breaker manufacturers.

ABB is at the forefront of circuit breaker manufacturers, offering homes and industries the ability to achieve maximum performance while limiting the negative impact on the environment. With companies operating in over 100 countries around the globe, ABB is a leader in its field. ABB offers products from miniature circuit breakers to molded-case breakers and guarantees its products are among the safest and most dependable on the market.

Perhaps better known for home appliances and products for various industries, Siemens is also a leading circuit breaker manufacturer. In 1998, Siemens executed a major recall of one of their circuit breaker products. The breaker in question was mostly used in hot tubs and spas. Although Siemens claims they are unaware of any injuries due to malfunction, they erred on the side of caution. The breakers were found to have the potential cause electrocution of people in hot tubs.

GE circuit breakers are probably some of the best-known and used circuit breakers on the market. GE offers circuit breakers that are compliant with Federal regulations. This circuit breaker manufacturer offers a wide range of products for all voltage needs. From home to industrial electrical necessities, GE has products for both low and high voltage electrical outputs.

ITE is credited as the founder of 5 kV air magnetic circuit breakers. They were among the first circuit breaker manufacturers to offer low energy and high quality solutions to industrial electrical needs. ITE also offers medium and high voltage circuit breakers for a variety of purposes.

Cutler-Hammer (Eaton) is also a well-known circuit breaker manufacturer. Perhaps one of the most innovative technologies to come from this company in recent years is the fireguard circuit breaker. Cutler-Hammer’s FireGuard provides protection from fire hazards that result from arcing faults. FireGuard circuit breakers will likely become the standard circuit breakers used in 21st century homes because they provide advanced protection against some of the most common causes of house fires.

The reliability of Federal Pacific, an established circuit breaker manufacturer, is questionable at best. These breakers have a notorious reputation for failure to trip when hit with a power surge. Some experts claim the rate to be upwards of 25%. Failure to trip during a power surge can cause structural fires. Rumors have circulated that the company was “de-listed” from the UL, although the company states they simply “went out of business”. Regardless of the actual reason for this, most electrical experts recommend discontinuing the use of these circuit breakers since most tests show an unacceptable failure rate.

Another circuit breaker manufacturer, Square D, has a long history in the circuit breaker business. This company was the first to offer plug-in type circuit breakers in 1951, which was then highly innovative technology. Since that time, Square D continues to be a leader in circuit breaker technology and offers a wide variety of products for both home and industry.

According to product reviews, ETA is the leading manufacturer of circuit breakers around the world. Their circuit breakers are crafted with precision and are used for a variety of circuit protection technologies. Thermal, magnetic, high-performance and electronic are just a few of ETA’s specialties. They continue to strive to create and produce the best circuit protection on the market.

Since 1947, Westinghouse circuit breakers have been among the most durable and reliable on the market. In tests, these breakers continue to deliver high performance to industries and their electrical needs. It is likely that Westinghouse will continue to be a leader in this field because they continually strive to meet the needs of advancing technologies.

A Quick Guide to Plastic Mailboxes

If you are in the market for a new mailbox, you may be having trouble deciding what kind to purchase. One type that has been gaining in popularity is that of plastic mailboxes. They are the most inexpensive version of all of the mailboxes. They often cost less that $50 (not including the cost of the post). For more information, please read on for a quick guide to plastic mailboxes.

Plastic mailboxes are highly durable, lightweight, weatherproof, and often made with indestructible double walled plastic construction materials (which protects against vandalism). A Quick Guide to Home Mailboxes

Everyone in the United States gets mail. This means that every one in the United States needs a mailbox. If you are in need of a mailbox, or if you just want to purchase a new mailbox for your home, you may want some information about your options for home mailboxes.

There are two types of home mailboxes. The most common is a curbside mailbox. But some people also have a wall mounted mailbox. These can be placed directly next to your front door. They sit either vertically or horizontally.

The most common home mailboxes used are the metal ones. These are inexpensive to purchase, however, they are prone to rusting. If you do not want a rusting problem, you can purchase one made of vinyl. The vinyl mailboxes are also less prone to fading, chipping, or cracking. But they are a bit more expensive to purchase.

Some of the least expensive home mailboxes are the plastic ones. They are highly durable, weather proof, rust proof, and very light weight. Some are even made to be indestructible because they are made with double walled plastic.

The last type is security mail boxes. These are vandal proof and they come with a locking mechanism. This prevents someone from stealing your mail and from damaging the mailbox. These are usually quite expensive to purchase, but sometimes needed.

The above were some of the most common choices you have for purchasing home mailboxes. There are many options to choose from. Decide how much you want to spend and what type of mailbox best suits your needs. This way you can easily find what you are looking for and be one step closer to getting your mail!

A Look At The Different Types Of Heat Exchangers

The Heat Exchanger is a device built for efficient transferring of heat energy from one fluid to another across a solid surface. In a heat exchanger design both the convection and conduction principle of heat transfer is used. There is no radiative transfer of heat energy between the exchanger and the environment unless the exchanger is uninsulated or its external surfaces are very hot. The heat exchanger has wide use in engineering processes. The most common example of a heat exchanger is the radiator in a car. Here the hot fluid in the radiator is cooled by the air flow over the radiator surface.

Some other examples of heat exchanger are preheaters, intercoolers, boilers, condensers, etc. that are used in the power plants. They are also used in refrigeration, air conditioning, chemical processing and power production.

Different types of Heat Exchangers:

There are different types of heat exchangers. They can be classified according to its construction into the following types i.e. shell and tube heat exchanger and plate and frame heat exchanger.

– Shell and tube heat exchanger: This is a typical heat exchanger. The shell and tube heat exchanger is consisting of a series of finned tubes through which one of the fluids runs and the other fluid which is to be heated or cooled runs over the finned tubes.

– Plate and frame heat exchanger: In a plate and frame heat exchanger, the fluids are separated by plates with a large surface area. Here the flow is directed through the baffles.

The heat exchangers classified according to its uses are recuperative type, regenerative type and evaporative type.

– Recuperative type: In recuperative type heat exchanger the heat from the fluids on either side of a dividing wall is exchanged.

– Regenerative type: In regenerative type heat exchanger the hot and cold fluids are allowed to occupy the same space containing a matrix of material that works alternatively as a sink or source for heat flow.

– Evaporative type: In evaporative type heat exchanger the fluid is evaporatively cooled in the same space as coolant such as a cooling tower.

– The recuperative type of heat exchanger again can be designed according to one of the following types i.e. Parallel-flow, Counter-flow and Cross-flow.

– Parallel-flow heat exchanger: In this type of heat exchanger both the fluids exchanges heat by flowing in the same direction through individual pipes.

– Counter-flow heat exchanger: In this type of heat exchanger the fluids exchanges heat by flowing in the opposite direction through individual pipes.

A Leap In To The Unknown?

If you are thinking of purchasing your first home, and taking your first step onto the property ladder, your head will be spinning with the amount of advice you will come across for first time buyers.

Everybody purchasing a house before you has experienced the same things, so you can take some comfort in that. If you know someone who has recently purchased a house, whether it be for the first time or not, it can be an idea to get some advice in simple terms from them.

Unless you are a person with substantial means, you will likely be looking to purchase your house using a mortgage. Often first time buyers do not have any money saved which they could use as a down payment, or deposit. This means that they will be borrowing 100% of the value of the home, and obviously repayments are going to be higher. If possible, it is always better to purchase a house using the biggest down payment you can afford, thus reducing your monthly repayments.

A 20% down payment is the threshold at which you’re exempt from private mortgage insurance, which can add a few hundred non-tax-deductible dollars to your monthly payment.

If you cannot afford a deposit or down payment you must still find the money for the closing costs of buying your home, if you estimate about 2% – 3% of the purchase price then that’s a good ball park figure.

There are many different mortgages available on the market, and some are specifically for first time buyers. With so many lenders and so many different types of mortgage, going for one specifically for first time buyers is not always beneficial, so bear that in mind when you are researching.

One last thing, and most importantly is that if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage, or any other loans secured on it, you are at risk of losing it, so don’t overstretch yourself, work out how much you can comfortably afford each month and don’t go above that. That is one thing you must be very strict on.

A Hammock For Everyone – Get The Right One For You

A hammock is like a bed. It is a piece of furniture used by a person for rest and relaxation. The difference between them is the fact that a bed usually comes with a frame shaped like a rectangle underneath a mattress. A hammock is bed that is hanging or suspended in the air tied between supports like two trees made up of heavy netting or a canvas. The important question remains whether or not all hammocks regardless of the material used for weaving can give the same level of comfort.

Q. How Do I Know What Type Of Hammock To Buy?
A. There are generally 3 types of hammocks. These are namely known as fabric, Mayan and rope style hammocks. One or two of these kinds are suitable for either indoor or outdoor use. The other can only be used indoors while the other only good if it is used outdoors. By being able to determine exactly where the hammock will be installed, the person will be able to make the right decision of what type of hammock to purchase.

Q. How Can I Be Sure The Hammock I Buy Will Fit Within My Budget?
A. As mentioned earlier, there are 3 types of hammocks. The price of the hammock one wishes to purchase will greatly depend on the type of material used. The price of the material used dictates the price of the kind of hammock one wants to buy and if one has limited budget, one won’t be able to buy the hammock made out of the best material since it is expensive. However if one is rich and money is no object, then that person will not have a problem picking the most expensive and luxurious hammock available.

Q. How Can I Tell If The Hammock Will Support My Weight?
A. Again, this goes to the type of material used. A fabric hammock is made out of thick rope and can take a beating of up to 450 lbs. A hammock made out of canvas can only accommodate 5 to 20 lbs. because of the closed weaving. A Mayan style hammock is very sensitive and can only hold less than 10 lbs.

Q. How Can I Tell When My Hammock Needs Maintenance?
A. The strength of the hammock is dependent on the material used in making it. A fabric hammock made out of thick rope as mentioned before requires heavy maintenance since it is susceptible to mild or dew especially in a fairly wet climate. A canvas on the other hand because of its material is very durable and thus requires little maintenance. A Mayan hammock is like a fabric hammock in the sense that it is very sensitive and can tear easily which would require high maintenance in keeping this kind of hammock in shape.

Q. Which Hammocks Are OK To Swing Or Rock In?
A. The material used in making a hammock makes it either heavy or lightweight. Fabric hammocks are weaved by hand and are usually made of heavy material making it a challenge to move from one place to another. Canvas hammocks are lighter since water bounces of the material making it easy to relocate. Mayan hammocks like Canvas are also lightweight making it easy to transfer.

Q. How Can I Tell What Hammocks Are Comfortable?
A. Fabric hammocks are designed with small spaces in between them. The backside to this is that it doesn’t conform to ones body and there is usually an imprint visible in ones back when one gets off the hammock. Canvas hammocks on the other hand don’t leave any imprints. The only drawback is that this too does not conform to ones body during use. The most comfortable hammock of the 3 is Mayan since this type of hammock conforms to the shape of anyone who uses it.

A DIY Guide On Woodworking Jigs

Woodworking jigs are a necessary part of any woodworking shop. They are great for repetitive tasks in many wood working projects. They make complex projects easier to manage and faster. You can purchase pre made jigs or make your own. Although they are inexpensive, making your own from scrap wood is even cheaper. Depending on the type of projects you like to do, you will need a variety of different jigs.

Types of Woodworking Jigs

Dovetail jigs are great for making dovetail joints accurately. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Another option is to make your own dovetail jig. You can find templates for making your own jigs on the internet or in most stores that sell wood working supplies. Many of these templates allow you to make up to twelve different size jigs.

You may want to puck up a dovetail bit for your router and a dovetail saw. These are great tools if you intend to make your own jigs. Templates allow you to make variable spaced or fixed dovetails for a variety of projects, including cabinets, drawers and small boxes. Some systems come with bits and templates together in one kit. These save money compared to purchasing the components separately.

Dovetail saws are used to cut not only dovetails, but other fine joints for projects. The blades on these saws are thinker than other saws. This allows for greater accuracy. Itís important to purchase a good quality tool for making tight joints and professional looking projects. Look for about fourteen to seventeen points per inch in a good quality saw.

A dowel jig is used for making quality, consistent dowels. If you are using a thick timber, get a self centering jig for better accuracy. There are a variety of sizes from a quarter to one half inch. Complete kits are available that include the dowel jig with several hundred dowels in a variety of sizes. Glue is sometimes included in these kits.

A kreg jig is great for cabinet making. Perfectly positioned slides are necessary if the movement in the drawer is to be smooth. Using kreg jigs save time because you wonít need to measure and mark the spaces for drawer slides. These make it easier to mount metal drawer slides. They can be used for center, bottom or extension mounted drawers. This is an inexpensive, yet versatile piece of equipment.

Making Woodworking Jigs Yourself

Making your own woodworking jigs saves money in supplies. Use inexpensive materials and scrap pieces of plywood for making your own jig. Since you use the jigs for one project only, you donít want to spend much on materials. If you plan to re use your jigs, use a stronger hardwood to make them.

You can find instructions for making your own jigs in woodworking books or magazines. Instructions are also available on the internet. You can print these out for future reference. Consider getting a good binder to keep your jig making instructions organized in your workshop. Using plastic page covers will protect the instructions from getting dirty, ripped or damaged.
